Leaving a job: what to ask for / As jy 'n werk verlaat: waarvoor om te vra

Whether you resign or your employer ends the job, these are your basics:

• Notice: 1 week if you've worked there 6 months or less; 4 weeks if longer. Notice should be in writing.
• Final pay: any unpaid wages, and pay for annual leave you didn't take.
• Certificate of service: a letter with your name, your employer's details, your start and end dates, your job and your last pay. Ask for it; it helps with your next job.
• UIF: your employer should send the UIF a declaration that your job has ended. This helps if you claim.

If you think you were dismissed unfairly, time limits apply, so get advice quickly.

• Kennis: 1 week as jy 6 maande of minder daar gewerk het; 4 weke as dit langer is. Kennis behoort op skrif te wees.
• Finale betaling: enige onbetaalde loon, en betaling vir jaarlikse verlof wat jy nie geneem het nie.
• Diensbewys: 'n brief met jou naam, jou werkgewer se besonderhede, jou begin- en einddatums, jou werk en jou laaste loon. Vra daarvoor; dit help met jou volgende werk.
• UIF: jou werkgewer behoort die UIF in kennis te stel dat jou werk geëindig het. Dit help as jy eis.

As jy dink jy is onregverdig ontslaan, geld daar tydsbeperkings, so kry vinnig advies.
